Historic Madeira Luncheon with Georgia Author Sonny Seals
Location: The Chatham Club
14th Floor of The DeSoto, 15 E. Liberty St., Savannah
Enjoy spectacular views of the Historic District from the elegant Chatham Club, while you lunch with Sonny Seals, Chairman and Co-Founder of Historic Rural Churches of Georgia and author of the award-winning book by that name. He is also the founder and managing director of Eton Partners, LLC, a retained executive search firm. A graduate of Georgia Tech, Mr. Seals has served on several boards, including the Alumni Association Board of Trustees and the Ferst Center for the Performing Arts. He presently chairs the external Arts Advisory Board at Georgia Tech.
As Mr. Seals has said, the “story of historic churches isn’t just about the buildings — it is about the people of a remarkable era — their dedication, their hard work, their faith, their commitment and their sacrifices. These historic church buildings are not only a testament to their lives, but they are time capsules from a generation of Georgians who embodied the American Dream.”
Friday’s Chatham Club luncheon menu will include their Signature Low Country Crab Cake,** served over their specialty Lemon Vinaigrette Salad, and a scrumptious Flourless Chocolate Torte with Raspberries.
The meal with conclude with a taste of famed Madeira wine, the preferred wine of our Founding Fathers and enjoyed by Mr. Charles Green and Mr. Andrew Low. The Rare Wine Co. has produced an historic series of Madeira wines, recreating the flavors of past centuries. We will enjoy the Savannah Verdelho Official Reserve Madeira, and Dr. Paul Pressly, the former sommelier of the Madeira Club, will say a few words about the use of Madeira by Savannahians since the 18th century.
“Of all the wines created over the past five hundred years, there is none that lays greater claim to being a wine of its time and place than Madeira wine…. It is a wine of nearly magical complexity, whose powerful aromas can fill a house.” Mannie Berk, adapted from his forward to Madeira, The Island Vineyard, 2nd Edition, The Rare Wine Co., 2011.
